There is a very nice park called Sannonu-Park, just 1 minute walk from our hostel! There will be many beautiful cherry blossoms there as well as the parks of our recommendation below.

Yanagawa Sagemon-Meguri Hinamatsuri Festival @ Yanagawa, February 11th – April 3rd 2013

Hinamatsuri (Dolls festival, Girls’ day) is held on the 3rd of March.
Ornamental dolls are displayed around this day in Japan.

In Yanagawa city, many citizens open their houses to the public to show their dolls during Sagemon-Meguri festival.

50min by Nishitetsu train to Yanagawa station from Nishitetsu Fukuoka station.

If you have a JR pass, take JR train from Hakata station to Omuta station(50min by express train) and transfer the train to Nishitetsu train. JR Omuta staion and Nishitetsu Omuta staion is the same station but different platforms.
Take a Nishitetsu train from Nishitetsu Omuta station to Yanagawa station.(about 10min by express train, 330yen)

Event at Hakata Folk Museum, Rice cake pounding

To celebrate the lunar new year, Rice steamed over a large Hakata charcoal brazier will be pounded into rice cakes as dancers perform to shamisen and taiko accompaniment.

Rice cake will be handed out to the first 100 people.

Nagasaki Lantern Festival @ Nagasaki City, February 10th – February 24th 2013

Nagasaki’s historical ties with China are celebrated in this annual festival. 15,000 Chinese lanterns are placed throughout the city, shaped like Chinese historical figures, astrology symbols and more. Parades and performances from Chinese acrobats and lion dancers too!

* By JR : About 2hours by express train (4380yen for one way) from Hakata St. to Nagasaki St.
Last train leaves Nagasaki station at 9:31pm.

* By highway bus : 2 and a half hours (2500yen for one way/4500yen for round way) from Hakata bus terminal to Nagasaki bus terminal.
Last bus leaves Nagasaki Bus terminal at 9:30pm.

Setsubun Festival @Tochoji temple, February 3rd 2013

Setsubun literally means seasonal division.
On the 3rd of February, it’s said that this is the beginning of spring.
Beans,candies, and oranges(!) are thrown on this day to cleanse all evils away and to bring good luck!

Let’s join this event and get  good luck!

National cultural property and Fukuoka city cultural property will be shown to the visitors during this event!

Venue: Tochoji temple
Time: 10:00 – 18:00
Access: 10mins walk from Hakata station.
OR Take a subway from Hakata station, get off at Gion station, come out from gate no.1.
The temple is right there.

Setsubun Festival @ Kushida shrine, February 3rd 2013

Setsubun literally means seasonal division.
On the 3rd of February, it’s said that this is the beginning of spring.
Japanese people throw roasted beans on this day to cleanse all evils away and
bring good luck!!

The bean throwing festival takes place at Kushida shrine.
The 5-meter-height-mask at the gate the shrine is popular.
Some Kabuki actors join the event.

You can take a 30 minutes walk from Khaosan Fukuoka.
OR take a subway from Hakata station to Gion (2mins,100yen) + 3 minutes walk.
OR take a bus #114 from Mizuho (just across the street from Khaosan Fukuoka) to Canal city Hakata (15mins, 180yen) + 1 minute walk.

The season of Japanese plums has come! Let’s go to Plum blossoms watching

Here are our two recommendations to visit!

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine : 6000 plum trees!! Plum sake, plum pickles are sold at souvenir shops at the shrine!

Also from January 25th to March 10th, there is “Plum Bonsai Market” to enjoy!

 

Maizuru Park : 500 plum trees! Have a walk also through Ohori park!

Onisube Fire festival @ Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, January 7th 2013

Since 986, this fire festival at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is believed to take bad luck off and bring good luck.
The festival starts at 6pm.
Men are divided in to two groups, one to attack the devil and another to protect it.
More than 200 torches are lit around 9pm and it’s the climax!!!

Venue: Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine
Date&Time: 6:00pm – 10:00pm on Jan. 7th
Access : 2 ways to get there

・Take a subway from Hakata sta.to Tenjin sta.(6min,200yen).
Then take Nishitetsu train from Nishitetsu Fukuoka sta.to Dazaifu sta. (transfer once at Futsukaichi sta.),(30min,390yen) As you get off the train, you will see the path to the shrine.

・Take a JR from Hakata to Futsukaichi sta.(25min,270yen) Walk to Nishitetsu Futsukaichi sta.(10min). Take a Nishitetsu train to Dazaifu sta.(5min,150yen), As you get off the train, you will see the path to the shrine.
