Shiko Munakata exhibition – Prayer and Journey – @ Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art, May 26th – July 3rd

Munakata was born in Aomori city, northern Japan and became a famous woodblock printmaker. He had only elementary school education because his family was very poor. However, he exhibited a passion for art from early childhood. When he was 17, he was fascinated by a reproduction painting of Vincent van Gogh’s works. Then he decided to become the “Van Gogh of Aomori”!! The Kabuki actors parade “FUNANORIKOMI” @ Hakata river, May 29th

Funanorikomi is the traditional ceremony to show Kabuki actors before their show starts from June in Hakata. Kabuki actors parade Hakata river on the boat. They don’t make up like Kabuki stage at this time. However, at the ceremonies, they speak in a special way like on a stage and wearing cool Hakama(Samurai style Kimono). Yoko Kamoi was the Japanese Lingerie designer, painter and essayist. Her pretty and colorful works sparked a change in women’s consciousness in the staid 1950s when there were only white lingerie. Kukai Theater 2011 @ Tochoji Temple, May 22nd , 24th and 25th

Tochoji is the temple famous for the giant Buddha. Kawawatari Jinkou Sai –the River Crossing Festival- @ Tagawa city, May 21st and 22nd

This festival is one of five major Fukuoka prefecture festivals. Decorated floats and mikoshi(a portable shrine) which contained a different god for each area are taken through the River to purify them. On May 21st, the main event stars from 3pm though the festival starts from 8am. Om May 22nd, the main event starts from 2pm and the festival ends at around 6:30pm. Let’s enjoy this historical dynamic festival and feel the Japanese festival atmosphere in Tagawa!!
