Summer Festival is held in Kego shrine which is at the middle of Tenjin downtown!! Let’s go and pray for good health over the summer time. You can enjoy the live performances on the stage and try some foods at from the stalls. Time: 12am – 9pm Stage performances starts from 5pm Place: Kego Shrine Acsess Take subway from Hakata station and get off at “Tenjin” station.(200yen, 6min) 3min walk from the station.
The Hozuki (ground cherry) Festival is held in Atago Shrine on July 17th and 18th. You can buy Belled hozuki there and the proceeds are going to the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami relief effort. Some other events such as Yukata (Japanese Summer Kimono) Contest, Watermelon splitting and international cuisine give you a good time there!! Run entirely by volunteers, this year’s festival showcases 13 films including Jiyoung Kim’s humorous look at Japanese politics, Election in Japan 2, French director’s background documentary film on Japanese yakuza movie “Yakua Eiga”, and Indonesian transgender superhero action-comedy Madame X. This festival is held in Karatsu, Saga prefecture, not in Fukuoka. 6000 fireworks attract you on July 17th. How about to visit Karatsu castle before fireworks!? *If it rains, it will be postponed until July 18th.* Fireworks display: 8pm – 9:15pm Access Take the subway train from Hakata station and get off at “Karatsu” station.(about 1:20, 1100yen) From the station about 15min walk to the beach where you can see the fireworks dwsplay.

Chiran Neputa Matsuri The shuttle bus from Kagoshima Chuo station West exit 13:00 on 16th July. For return, leaves chiran at 21:30. Fireworks Festival is held in Sasaguri (14-20min travel by train from Hakata) on July 9th!! 1236 fireworks will be set off. You can also see Yamakasa (decorated floats) and various stalls. In June, there are 3500 stumps of colorful Hydrangea flowers at the hydrangea garden in Hakozaki shrine On weekends, there are some events such as mini Classic Concerts, Flute Ensembles, Garden Tea Ceremonies, etc. Hydrangea exhibit is from June 1st to June 30th, every year. This festival is one of five major Fukuoka prefecture festivals. Decorated floats and mikoshi(a portable shrine) which contained a different god for each area are taken through the River to purify them. On May 21st, the main event stars from 3pm though the festival starts from 8am. Om May 22nd, the main event starts from 2pm and the festival ends at around 6:30pm.
