Treasures of the Future – The Story of Conservation in Japan – @ Kyusyu National Museum, June 28th – August 28th

This exhibition focuses on Japanese aesthetics and values.
Not just showing National treasures, but you can also learn how people conserve and restore them.
The 12th century portrait of the famous military commander Yoritomo will be on display from June 28 to July 31st.

Adults – 1300yen,  Univ.&HS students – 1000yen,  MS & ES students – 600yen
Opening: 9:30 – 17:00
Closed: Monday
*However, the museum is opened on July 18 (Mon) and August 15 (Monday) and closed on the following day
Venue: Exhibition Gallery in Kyushu National Museum
Access : 2 ways to get there
・Take a subway from Hakata sta.to Tenjin sta. (6min,200yen).
Then take Nishitetsu train from Nishitetsu Fukuoka sta.to Dazaifu sta. (transfer once at Futsukaichi sta.),(30min,390yen) From there it’s a 10minutes walk to the Museum.

・Take a JR from Hakata to Futsukaichi sta.(25min,270yen) Walk to Nishitetsu Futsukaichi sta.(10min). Take a Nishitetsu train to Dazaifu sta.(5min,150yen), From there it’s a 10minutes walk to the Museum.

The Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival @ Fukuoka City, July 1st – July 15th

The Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival brings SUMMER to Fukuoka!!
The climax of this big festival is “Oiyama” held on July 15th.
However, there are some events are held from 1st of July.
Don’t miss this traditional dynamic festival!!!!!

Schedule

July 1st:

Kazariyama decorated floats put display
Huge decollated floats are displayed at several places in Fukuoka city.
Toban-cho oshioi-tori
Purifying themselves and praying for safety during the Yamakasa at
Hakozaki-hama beach starts from the evening.

July 9th:

Oshioi-tori(5:30pm-)
Another purifying and praying ceremony at Hakozaki-hama beach

July 10th:

Nagaregaki
The men carry their floats around their own area for warming-up exercise.

July 11th:

Asayama(early morning)
The race from 5:00 to 6:00 in the morning
Ta-nagaregaki(Evening)
The floats are carried to the other area in the evening

July 12th:

Oiyama narashi(From 3:59pm)
Performed as the practice for the major race on July 15th

July 13th:

Shudan yamamise(From 3:30pm)
The parade to show the floats to the people

July 14th:

Nagaregaki
Same as Nagaregaki on 10th of July. The final adjustments!

July 15th:

Oiyama(From 4:59am)
The Climax of this festival!! Let’s wake up early for the festival

Hydrangea Festival @ Hakozaki Shrine, June 1st – 30th 2011

In June, there are 3500 stumps of colorful Hydrangea flowers at the hydrangea garden in Hakozaki shrine
On weekends, there are some events such as mini Classic Concerts, Flute Ensembles, Garden Tea Ceremonies, etc.
Hydrangea exhibit is from June 1st to June 30th, every year.

Take a JR train from Hakata station to Hakozaki station, 200yen 5min + 10 min by walk.
By subway, take subway from Hakata station to Hakozaki-Miyamae station, 250yen 15min. Transfer at Nakasu-Kawabata station is necessary.

Shiko Munakata exhibition – Prayer and Journey – @ Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art, May 26th – July 3rd

Munakata was born in Aomori city, northern Japan and became a famous woodblock printmaker.
He had only elementary school education because his family was very poor.
However, he exhibited a passion for art from early childhood.
When he was 17, he was fascinated by a reproduction painting of Vincent van Gogh’s works.
Then he decided to become the “Van Gogh of Aomori”!!

Take a bus No. 44 from Mizuho, the closest bus stop from the hostel, to Tenjin-Kita ,about 30min 220yen.
On weekends, not so many buses run on this route.
You can also take a subway from Hakata station to Tenjin, 5min 200yen and 10min walk from the station.

The Kabuki actors parade “FUNANORIKOMI” @ Hakata river, May 29th

Funanorikomi is the traditional ceremony to show Kabuki actors before their show starts from June in Hakata.
Kabuki actors parade Hakata river on the boat.
They don’t make up like Kabuki stage at this time.
However, at the ceremonies, they speak in a special way like on a stage and wearing cool Hakama(Samurai style Kimono).
Don’t miss this chance to see them!!

1:45pm – “Koujyo”, the greeting from actors @ Kawabata Zenzai Hiroba
2:00pm – disembark @ Hakata Riverain
2:05pm – visit Kagami Tenmangu Shrine
2:15pm – ceremony @ Festa square in Hakata Riverain

If it rains, only the ceremony at Festa square in Hakata Riverain will be held from 2pm

Lingerie Avant-garde Manifesto – Yoko Kamoi’s pathway - @ IMS, May 14th – June 12th

Yoko Kamoi was the Japanese Lingerie designer, painter and essayist.
Her pretty and colorful works sparked a change in women’s consciousness in the staid 1950s when there were only white lingerie.

Not only her works, but also her photographs taken by her artistic friends such as Taro Okamoto attract you in this exhibition.

Kukai Theater 2011 @ Tochoji Temple, May 22nd , 24th and 25th

Tochoji is the temple famous for the giant Buddha.
To celebrate completion of the five layered tower, various artists perform in Tochoji for 3days!!

The fashion show, live performance of Calligraphy and fantastic concert of a famous vocalist

 

<May 24th>

Poetry of pilgrimage song ‘Goeika” along together with sounds of bells, an auspicious Kyogen “Suehiro”, and a Buddhism music “Syomyo” handed down orally by Koho- taishi in 1200 years ago
